What To Do to the Out of Stock Products In An Ecommerce Website

If you are running an ecommerce website or portal, then you must have faced this problem at some time or the other while optimizing it for search engines especially for Google. Whenever a product displayed on your website goes out of stock, you need to convey this to search engines and as well as to users that the product is no longer available. In such cases, there are three choices in front of you. And these are :-
  • You can either continue to keep that page on your server.
  • Or use 404 Error page.
  • Or show similar products on that page.
In the recent video, matt cutts has tried to solve this problem. To tackle such a situation he has categorized the websites in three different categories namely i. small, ii. medium and iii. big websites. Each ecommerce website falls under one of these categories. He has suggested a different solution for each kind of website. Let us read what he has to say about it.

1. Small Websites:- If your website is small having few pages, then you should avoid using a 404 the page. Instead, you should display similar products on that page to make the user think about other choices. In this way, the user does not get irritated from the not available products tag.

2. Medium Websites:- Medium websites can think of using a 404 error page if the product is no longer available. Moreover, this 404 page should be as such having links to important pages of the websites so that the user can navigate to other pages if he wants to visit other pages of the website.

But if the product is temporarily out of stock, then instead of using a 404 page, you should mention that the product is temporarily out of stock and will be back soon.

3. Large Websites:- If your website is large enough having a number of pages, he advices to use a meta unavailable_after tag which tells search engines that after this period of time, the product won't be available for purchase. And that meta tag is

<META NAME="GOOGLEBOT" CONTENT="unavailable_after: 25-Aug-2007 15:00:00 EST">
